Cyclopropanol is a basic building block that is susceptible to ring opening to form propionaldehyde due to the very unstable tension of the ternary ring. Therefore cyclopropanol can be used as a synthon for enolated propionaldehyde. Cyclopropanol is also used by Chemicalbook to introduce cyclopropyl groups into molecules to synthesise cyclopropyl esters, sulfonates and amines. Cyclopropyl-containing compounds are used as potential antiviral drugs and also for controlled protein transport studies.
